4th Meeting of the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET)

The 4th Meeting of the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET) was jointly organized by SESRIC, in its capacity as the OIC Technical Coordinator of OIC-OSHNET, and the Directorate General of Occupational Safety and Health (DGOSH) of the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services of the Republic of Turkey, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the OIC-OSHNET. The Meeting was conducted through a video conferencing platform on 07-08 October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 4th Meeting of the OIC-OSHNET brought together 52 high level representatives and National Focal Points (NFPs) from 37 OIC member countries to discuss and adopt two important documents; “Rules of Procedure” and “OIC-OSHNET Work Plan 2021-2022”.

The Meeting started with the opening remarks of H.E. Mr. Nebil DABUR, Director General of SESRIC. During his speech, H.E. Mr. Nebil DABUR underlined the importance of enhancing the quality of occupational safety and health (OSH) systems in the OIC member countries for the well-being of workers, employers and the society in general. In addition, H.E. Mr. DABUR briefed the audience on the successful activities implemented by SESRIC in the field of OSH since the inception of the OIC-OSHNET and urged participating OSH Authorities to actively participate in the capacity building training activities organized by SESRIC. He also launched the new version of the OIC-OSHNET Portal, which has been initiated and hosted by SESRIC on its website as an active platform and knowledge hub for all national OSH institutions and professionals in the OIC member countries.

H.E. Mr. Cafer UZUNKAYA, Director General of Occupational Safety and Health (DGOSH) of the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services of the Republic of Turkey addressed the participants in the opening session and emphasized the importance of close cooperation among the OIC member countries in the field of OSH in order to develop the institutional and human capacities and enhance knowledge exchange and sharing of good practices in this field. Furthermore, Mr. UZUNKAYA highlighted the active role of Turkey, as the Secretariat of the OIC-OSHNET, in hosting the meetings of the Network as well as sharing its experience and knowledge to contribute to the efforts of the relevant OSH Authorities of the OIC member countries towards improving their OSH systems.

The opening session was followed by a presentation on “The Role of Occupational Safety and Health in the Implementation of the OIC Labour Market Strategy 2025” presented by Dr. Kenan BAGCI, Senior Researcher at SESRIC. During the meeting, the participants discussed and elaborated on the new “Rules of Procedure” and two-year “Work Plan (2021-2022)” of the Network. These two documents, which have been adopted at the end of the meeting, aim at ensuring effective functioning of the Network with identified roles and responsibilities of different entities through a guideline for the activities to be undertaken by the members of the Network during the upcoming two years 2021-2022.

The OIC-OSHNET was launched in 2011 in order to establish closer cooperation among the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Institutions of the OIC member countries through sharing knowledge, experience and best practices. SESRIC assumes the role of the OIC Technical Coordinator of the OIC-OSHNET and carries out a specific capacity building programme on OSH namely, Occupational Safety and Health Capacity Building Programme (OSH-CaB) to support the efforts of the OIC member countries in improving workplace safety and health.
